Major vs Minor Arcana: How the Tarot Deck Fits Together

The Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck has 78 cards divided into two groups. The 22 Major Arcana explore broad experiences and life themes. The 56 Minor Arcana bring attention to everyday situations, responses, and practical details. Both groups matter in a reading.

The 22 Major Arcana

The Major Arcana run from the Fool through the World. Their images introduce themes such as beginnings, choice, structure, change, reflection, and completion. These are interpretive themes, not a fixed series of events everyone must experience.

The Emperor, for example, can invite reflection on structure and boundaries. The Hermit turns attention toward solitude and introspection. A Major Arcana card can give a reading a broad question to explore, but it does not prove that a life-changing event is about to occur.

The 56 Minor Arcana and their four suits

Each suit has 14 cards: Ace through Ten, followed by Page, Knight, Queen, and King. Cups are commonly associated with feelings and relationships; Wands with action and creativity; Swords with thought, communication, and conflict; Pentacles with resources, work, and practical stability.

A suit is a starting point rather than a restriction. A Cups card in a career reading might prompt you to consider workplace relationships. A Pentacles card in a love reading might draw attention to how care is expressed through dependable, everyday actions.

What court cards can represent

Pages, Knights, Queens, and Kings can be read as approaches to a situation: learning, pursuing, caring for, or directing something. They can also bring a relationship or role to mind, depending on the question.

Do not assume that a court card identifies a person’s gender, age, or appearance. Ask which behavior or quality is relevant before deciding that the card represents a particular person.

Read both groups together

Imagine the Emperor beside Eight of Pentacles. Structure and boundaries can connect with practice and skill: you might create a regular study routine or define a project’s scope. The Major card supplies a broad theme, while the Minor card helps you consider its everyday expression.

A spread containing only Minor Arcana is still a complete reading. Likewise, several Major Arcana can be explored without treating them as a measure of how important or inevitable an event is. Start with each card’s position and the question you actually asked.
